Measuring Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies: Launch of the Inaugural SDG16 Global Report

Organized by the SDG16 Data Initiative, a consortium of International IDEA, Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), Namati, Open Society Foundations (OSF), Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Saferworld, Results for Development (R4D), Small Arms Survey (SAS), Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), Transparency, Accountability & Participation (TAP) Network, Transparency International, and World Justice Project (WJP).
To meet the ambition of the 2030 Agenda, the SDGs must be matched by equally comprehensive and inclusive data collection, monitoring and accountability measures. While national governments and specialized intergovernmental institutions will be responsible for official UN monitoring of the SDGs, supplementary data from nongovernmental sources – such as civil society organizations and research institutions – will also play a crucial role in providing the most complete and accurate picture possible of global progress. This is especially true of SDG16, with its 12 targets aimed at achieving the goal of promoting peaceful, just and inclusive societies.
This side event at the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) marks the launch of the inaugural annual SDG16 Data Initiative Global Report, curated by the SDG16 Data Initiative, a consortium of 14 organizations. This launch event will present the 2017 Global Report designed to support the open tracking of SDG16. The 2017 Global Report showcases global progress on SDG16 targets, best available data on all the SDG16 targets, and explores challenges and opportunities to filling data gaps and expanding the scope of measurement for the complex targets of SDG16 at all levels. The SDG16 Data Initiative also collects, curates, and communicates available data for SDG16 targets online at SDG16.org, while continuing to catalyze action through events and workshops throughout the year.
