United Nations Association of Australia – International Day of Peace Address 2017
Inaugural peace address by Dr Gerardo P. Sicat to mark the International Day of Peace.
Dr Gerardo P. Sicat will explore the connection between peace and economic factors that make countries achieve prosperity and greater social cohesion in the context of the nation state. Dr Sicat will touch on countries according to their experience with peace — the peace index. When economic growth, employment and increase in productivity reach a wide segment of society, the more that society tends to work toward enhancing common values. Rising income and improvements in economic welfare enhance the widening of economic and social choices open to the citizenry. This experience contributes to the adoption of choices that are more conducive to social harmony, including the adoption of democratic values and institutions. Hence, countries that experience a high level of prosperity tend to move toward more social cohesion while those countries that are mired in poverty tend to be absorbed with questions that accentuate social dissension. Dr Sicat will draw on examples of developing countries, including his own country.
